Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - Advanced care for our tiniest patients

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

Our NICU at Bwera General Hospital is a specialised unit providing intensive medical care and monitoring for newborns who are premature, have low birth weight, or are critically ill after birth. Our dedicated neonatal team works tirelessly to give every baby the best possible start in life.

Conditions We Manage in NICU

  • Premature birth (babies born before 37 weeks)
  • Low Birth Weight (LBW) and Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW)
  • Neonatal jaundice (phototherapy treatment)
  • Neonatal sepsis and infections
  • Birth asphyxia and respiratory distress syndrome
  • Feeding difficulties and metabolic disorders

NICU Services Provided

  • Continuous vital sign monitoring (heart rate, temperature, oxygen saturation)
  • Oxygen therapy and respiratory support
  • Phototherapy for neonatal jaundice
  • Intravenous feeding and nasogastric tube feeding
  • Administration of IV antibiotics and medications
  • Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) to promote bonding and warmth
  • Breastfeeding support and lactation counselling

Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC)

We strongly promote Kangaroo Mother Care where the mother carries her premature baby skin-to-skin. This stabilises the baby's temperature, improves breathing, encourages breastfeeding and strengthens the mother-baby bond.

A Message of Hope:

Having a baby in the NICU can be stressful. Our team is here to support you every step of the way. We celebrate every milestone your baby achieves together with you.
